Singing Hands

Signing fun for little ones

I’ve had lots of fun and learnt useful signs to meet my baby’s needs – the course MORE than met my expectations. All the signs were clearly explained and the hand-outs were great.

Singing Hands and Something Special – Sep, 2006

Mr Tumble

In early 2005, we filmed a little segment for the ‘arched window’ on BBC Cbeebies Tikkabilla. In this slot, which was first shown in December 2005, we did a signed sing-a-long session (including our fave song ‘Mmm mmm frog’) with a group of children. It was a really inclusive session with our own kids plus other children from local schools and nurseries that we visit, some toddlers who had attended our baby signing classes and some friends from the Toy Library for Children with Special Needs.

We were therefore delighted to then be invited by the Producer of Something Special to contribute to this new series. You will see from the list below that five of the new episodes are focused specifically on showing you how to sign nursery rhymes and songs. These episodes feature a magical nursery rhyme world with a castle and a blue road for Justin to explore…....

Our Something Special dollies In each of the nursery rhyme episodes, there is a tinkling sound and what does Justin see? Two little dolls sitting on pods with woolly hair and red t-shirts – a.k.a. Singing Hands! Alas, we have not been able to procure those little plasticine dollies to have on our mantelpieces at home. We have been told that they are under lock and key in the Props cupboard at the BBC ...or by now they could be in the bin, who knows?! Anyway, with a sprinkling of magic dust we then morph into the two of us. In each episode we introduce one or two songs and Justin/Mr Tumble introduces lots more. There are also many other songs throughout the series so you should begin to build up your repertoire of signs and songs in no time at all.

We were also lucky enough to take our children along with a couple of other friends to meet Mr Tumble for ‘The Park’ episode in rainy Bournemouth (not sure exactly who was more pleased to meet him – us or the kids!). Anyway, they had a great time at the picnic there and enjoyed tweaking Mr Tumble’s red clown’s nose!
