Through the ‘arched window’ on Cbeebies Tikkabilla – Jan, 2006
Back in April 2005 we filmed a little segment for the ‘arched window’ on BBC Cbeebies Tikkabilla. In this slot, which was first shown in December 2005, we did a signed sing-a-long session (including our fave song ‘Mmm mmm frog’) with a group of children. It took about 4 hours to produce a couple of minutes of footage but we all had a great time!
The slot was exactly how we wanted it to turn out – it was a really inclusive session with our own kids plus other children from local schools and nurseries that we visit, some toddlers who had attended our baby signing classes and some friends from the Toy Library for Children with Special Needs. Everyone was singing and signing together and having fun.
Allan Johnston (the creator of Something Special and the director of this episode of Tikkabilla) had experience of working in a special school and was familiar with the use of Makaton with children with learning difficulties. Here is what he said about coming along to see us sing:
“I had a great time yesterday morning.….What fascinated me about the signing was seeing it performed in stereo….it had a real dance and rhythmic quality about it …….also it was noticeable how much fun you were both having – there was so much energy and you both smiled throughout!”
Something Special then went on to win two well-deserved RTS (Royal Television Society) awards which led to the programme being commissioned for another series. To our delight and total surprise, Allan then invited us to contribute to the nursery rhyme episodes of the series which is starting on the 16th September 2006.
